Who are School Counselors?

School counselors address the academic and developmental needs of all students, by working with students, parents, school staff and the community. School counselors follow a guidance curriculum when working with students in individual, small group and classroom settings. The counselor’s goal is to help students develop academic plans for their education that will prepare them for post secondary education as well as successful careers after graduation. In addition, counselors help all students develop necessary skills such as organizational, time-management, and study skills. In addition to academic issues, school counselors help students overcome personal issues that form barriers to learning such as divorce, death, and other developmental issues typical in childhood and adolescence. The counselor will see all students in the school once a month for classroom guidance. In addition, the counselor will also meet with small groups once a week, and certain individuals more frequently depending on his or her need. *ASCA (www.schoolcounselor.org)
